Dr. James Kiprop: Building AI That Speaks Swahili

Mar 2026DJKBy Dr. James Kiprop

The AI Research Division gave me resources to develop a Swahili-language LLM that's now being adopted by universities across East Africa.

Dr. James Kiprop, a computational linguist from Nairobi, had spent years researching how to build natural language processing systems for African languages. But without institutional support and computing resources, his research remained theoretical.

"Joining the AI Research Division at Next Switch Labs gave me the resources I needed to turn my research into reality," Dr. Kiprop says. "The compute infrastructure alone would have been impossible for me to access otherwise."

Dr. Kiprop led the development of a Swahili-language large language model, trained on a corpus of over 10 billion tokens. The model is now being adopted by universities across East Africa for research and education.

"This is just the beginning," he says. "We're already working on models for Hausa, Yoruba, and Amharic."
