New division will focus on developing AI solutions tailored to African languages, contexts, and challenges.
Next Switch Labs today announced the launch of its AI Research Division, dedicated to developing artificial intelligence solutions that address Africa's unique linguistic, cultural, and economic contexts.
Led by Dr. Amina Diallo as Chief AI Officer, the division will focus on four key areas: natural language processing for African languages, computer vision for agricultural and healthcare applications, predictive analytics for financial inclusion, and ethical AI frameworks.
"Africa cannot afford to be a passive consumer of AI technology developed elsewhere," said Dr. Diallo. "We must build AI that understands our languages, respects our values, and solves our problems."
The division has already begun work on a Swahili-language large language model, in partnership with universities across East Africa.
